PEMFC characterization

  • Test stations
    Test station for electrochemical characterization of materials for PEM FCs Equipped with an electronical load for the measurement of voltage current and output power (RBL48850-150-800) and frequency response analyzer for impedance spectroscopic analysis (MOD. Solartron 1260: Polarization and power density curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

    – Test station designed and manufactured in LIFTEC, to study and characterize single cells or full stacks up to a power of 2 kW. As a distinctive feature, the bench includes two lines for each gas (H2 and O2) for flow rates ranging up to 1.2 mL/min and 100 mL/min, respectively.

    To evaluate the fuel cell operation and electrochemical performance the bench includes two electronic dynamic loads and an AutoLab potentiostat/galvanostat instrument.

Microwave reactor

  • CEM discover
    With focused waveguide. Up to 300 W, heating rate 2-6 °C/s, with magnetic stirring. It can work at fixed microwave power or at fixed temperature (IR temperature sensor at the bottom).

Numerical Analysis Equipment

Beowulf cluster for computational calculations, which is mostly used to perform numerical simulations of various fluid dynamics problems. Processing and analysis of data obtained in the laboratory are also carried out in this facility.

Many “in house” codes, written in C, C++ and Fortran have been developed. Fluid-dynamics oriented programming tools are of common use (OpenFOAM, Deal.II, ANSYS FLUENT), along with other of more general orientation (CUDA, PETSC).

The system equipment has been installed and configured by LIFTEC computer staff. That makes it possible to install custom software or enable special system configurations. LIFTEC Beowulf runs on Debian Linux, Gigabit Ethernet networking and diskless-sytem computer nodes.

To evaluate the fuel cell operation and electrochemical performance the bench includes two electronic dynamic loads and an AutoLab potentiostat/galvanostat instrument.

Plug-flow fixed-bed reactor (gas and liquid feeds)

Custom made. Gas/liquid substrates feeding system (water + hydrocarbons, alcohols, polyols, acetic acid, etc.); evaporation unit; equipped with on-line GC-TCD detectors. condenser recovery of liquid by-products (off line GC-MS analysis); on-line GC FID-TCD gas products analysis. Tmax = 900 °C, atmospheric pressure.

Laboratory reaction/distillation setup

Custom made. Laboratory scale equipment. High volume (20 L) glass setup for reactions (esterification, etherification, alcoholysis, …) connected to a distillation column (diameter 13cm x 40 cm height) equipped with automated reflux. Pressure/temperature regulation. Safety additional equipment allows operating 24/24 h.

Fixed bed pilot reactor for gas phase reactions

Custom made. Pilot scale equipment Laboratory reaction/distillation setup. Custom made. Tubular reactor for gas phase reaction studies (operating parameters, heterogeneous catalysts, …) heated in using molten salt. Diameter 1″ x 4 m length. Operating temperature up to 350°C. Several gas flowmeters, P/T regulation and data acquisition with DCS. Several diameters of tube are possible.
